Many women die during pregnancy or childbirth for lack of simple medical procedures.
Every year 340,000 women worldwide die during pregnancy and childbirth.

Most of these women die from complications during the delivery of their baby, because they do not receive proper medical care in time. The biggest killers in Africa and Asia are severe bleeding, infections, hypertensive disorders and obstructed labour – but the vast majority of these deaths could be prevented, if women had better access to good quality obstetric care.
We work in places where there is poor infrastructure and where maternal mortality is high, such as the rural areas of Senegal, Ethiopia and Somaliland. We train health workers to manage emergencies during labour, and we provide them with the necessary medicines and materials so that women can be treated free of charge.
But our work doesn’t stop there.
We want to make sure women reach health facilities before it is too late. This is why we have adapted all terrain vehicles to serve as ambulances, which can be called out by village health workers to a woman’s home. If an emergency arises, the ambulance can rapidly transport the patient to the nearest health facility, where we have the best chance of saving the mother and the baby.
We believe in the power of partnerships to get things done. That is why at WAHA International, we work together with university teaching hospitals, midwives, obstetricians and gynaecologists, community groups and policymakers. But we also need the support of individuals like YOU to help reduce maternal deaths.
Follow our activities on Facebook, learn more about our work from our website, ask us questions about our work – and decide to act.
Let’s give women a fighting chance to survive childbirth.
