The Windows Phone Amber Update For Nokia Lumia Smartphones

Nokia recently rolled-out the Nokia Lumia Amber update for smartphones running Windows Phone 8. It promised a better and smarter experience for users, but for how far they it went, quite remarkable I would say. It was built base on users comments and feedback's with innovations on the sideline. Microsoft on the other hand also provided numerous significant additions to the software, here are the rundowns.

Improved image processing

The update brings significantly improved algorithms that offer better noise reduction, color reproduction, exposure control and auto-focus to every phone across the Lumia range. On the Lumia 920, controls to adjust the ISO settings of the camera from 800 to 3200 allow for even better low light performance.

Nokia Smart Camera

Debuted on the Nokia Lumia 925, this new camera app is ideal for taking pictures involving people and movement. Users can now get the app from the Store after downloading Lumia Amber update.

The app brings a slew of different options – use Best Shot to find the sharpest image from a series of 10; combine several shots of people in movement into one with Action Shot; heighten the appearance of speed by blurring the background with Motion Focus; create ideal group shots by choosing the best faces from a series with Change Faces, or remove unwanted objects from pictures.

But the app's performance was scaled according to the capabilities of your device. On the Nokia Lumia 720, 620 and 520, the burst mode used for some effects takes seven pictures rather than ten, and these are a lower resolution than on devices with more RAM (one-megapixel rather than five). Still great for social sharing on the Web.

Nokia Camera Pro

The newly announced Nokia Pro Camera was also made available for Lumia 920, Lumia 925, and Lumia 928. With the app, users can edit images fast and transform them creatively to taste.

 Nokia Video Trimmer and Nokia Video Uploader

Nokia Video Trimmer app is one among the new feature of the update that is capable or trimming taken videos easily without fuss.The said video could then be uploaded straight to youTube and the rest of the video hosting site via the Nokia Video Uploader.

Nokia Glance Screen

By public clamor, Nokia finally released the Sleeping Screen for Symbian counter part, the Nokia Glance Screen that brings a clock to the phone's screen during inactive mode, along with indicators to show battery level when running on a low battery or the phone is charging, and whether your phone is set to ‘silent’.

Users can activate the Nokia Glance screen in the display and touch section in Settings by swiping left to ‘glance’. Nokia Glance screen will be available for all WP8 Lumia devices except the Nokia Lumia 520 and Lumia 625, which have a smaller display memory.

Flip to silence and double-tap to unlock

Another two favorite features from Nokia Symbian phones were the Flipping to silence feature and the double tap to unlock gesture. Flipping the phone over is a great and easy way to mute the incoming call. Double tapping the screen on the other hand is something many people prefer to using the unlock key. Both of these features were optional.

Storage Check and faster map updates.

Storage check is an app that will help free up and manage phone memory while the Nokia Maps could now be updated freely without the need the re-install the whole country anew.

The update covers the Lumia 920 and Lumia 820 as well as Lumia 521, Lumia 810, and Lumia 928 in the US, and the global versions of Lumia 520, Lumia 620 and Lumia 720.

Nokia sponsors DLSU HackerCup: WP8

Young minds of De La Salle University are set to create the most innovative apps for the Windows Phone 8 OS in the DLSU HackerCup: WP8.

Happening on March 15-16, 2013 at the Microsoft Philippines office, the competition aims to promote the capabilities of Windows Phone 8 OS by encouraging the brightest among DLSU Science & Technology students to come up with the best tools and brightest ideas to fully utilize the latest in Microsoft’s mobile OS.

Registration is open to currently enrolled undergraduate students of DLSU (Manila and S&T Complex). Only registered and validated participants will be allowed to participate in the contest. Walk-ins will not be permitted to join. Registration ends on March 6, 2013. Validation will be sent through email.

Each team must consist of at least one member up to a maximum of four (4) team members. Teams will develop a Windows Phone 8 application based on a theme that will be announced on March 14, 2013, a day before the event. Participants may use any development tools and application frameworks to build their apps. They are expected to bring the necessary equipment and software to build their competition entry.

Each team will be given 24hours for actual building of the app which will commence at 3PM on March 15, 2013 and end at 3PM on March 16, 2013. They will then be given 3 minutes each to present their finished app in front of a panel of judges. Judging criteria will consist of 50% technical quality, 25% originality of idea/relation to theme and 25% design quality.

Winners will be announced after the pitching sessions. First place winners will win a HackerCup trophy plus 4 Nokia Lumia 920 Smartphones and 4 Globe Tattoo sticks. Second prize winners will receive a HackerCup trophy, 2 Nokia Lumia 820 Smartphones and 4 Globe Tattoo sticks; and third place winners will get 1 Nokia 820Smartphone and 4 Globe Tatoo sticks. Additionally, a Nokia Lumia 820 will also be given as a special prize in a category to be announced the day before the start of the competition.

Official Philippine Release Date of Nokia Lumia 920 and 820 Delayed Further To Late Q1, 2013

If your eagerly waiting for the Nokia Windows Phone 8 power line-ups, then you'll need to hold on a bit longer because the official and authorize Philippine versions of the Lumia 920 and 820 devices won't be available until late Q1 or March, 2013.

"The reason that we are pushing back the launch date is that it is sometimes necessary to revise delivery schedules based on global product availability", said Nikka Abes, Head of Communications for Nokia Philippines, Malaysia and Singapore. "While we are pleased about the response the phone has been getting from consumers in different parts of the world, we would of course like to apologize to Filipinos who were hoping to get their hands on a Lumia 920 and Lumia 820 sooner and we thank them for their continued patience."

I specifically mentioned official and authorize devices earlier because both phones are now being offered in gray markets for a heftier price. Gray would mean that its unofficial, unauthorized, or unintended by the original manufacturer, meaning, it doesn't have warranties and all.

Well, Nokia really need to solve their production issue fast because they'll miss all the hype that the two phones are currently enjoying, specially that the Mobile World Congress is coming, new smartphones will definitely be announce that might shift market focus. They have at least two months to sort everything up.

Confirmed! Nokia Lumia 920 and 820's Philippine Release Date

I wrote an article the other day about Nokia 920 and 820's unconfirmed release date in the Philippines, well, Ms. Nikka S. Abes, Head of Communications for Nokia Philippines, Malaysia and Singapore, sent me an email confirming the information having read the said article.

Accordingly, the Nokia 920 and 820 will be locally available for sale in January 2013 because of Nokia's roll-out strategy of bringing products to market when they have the right infrastructure, ecosystem and Nokia Care support to deliver the best local experience possible for consumers. 

And, I couldn't agree more, indeed the best business approach is perfecting every aspect of the competition so it could bring a solid long term effect to consumers.

Filipino's might have to wait a little longer but base on the aforementioned strategy, Nokia will guarantee that its worth the wait, though personally, even without such, the two Nokia Windows Phone 8 smartphones were more than worthy compared to other Windows Phone 8, the current breeds of Androids or even iPhone 5, the Lumia 920 most specially with its superior PureView camera technology, floating lens and PureMotion HD+.

Then there's the outstanding design and construction of both Lumia smartphones, the super sensitive capacitive touch, the wireless charging technology, exclusive features and applications like the Nokia Maps, Nokia Drive and Nokia Transport, Nokia City Lens, Nokia Music and so much more, it's insane to even think of buying other smartphones at the moment.

Nokia Lumia 920 and 820's Philippine Release Date!

This is it people, the most awaited Windows Phone 8 smartphones from Nokia which had stole attention from competing smartphones by outselling them in Germany and in most retail stores in the United Stated had finally took an unconfirmed released date in the Philippines and that is January next year.. Well yes, you've read it right, January 2013, that's according to a sales representative that I talked to in one of the Nokia Stores in Metro Manila. This would mean that it will miss the Christmas rush and Filipino's will have to wait a little longer if indeed true. 

Bad news of course for people who were waiting for these phones like the couple who also inquired with me about the Nokia Lumia 820's availability that very time and a welcome news for others whose budget were not ready just yet. I even added a few info when the couple asked the sales representative about the difference between Nokia Lumia 800 and Nokia Lumia 820 because she only mentioned about the memory card.

This is a bad business strategy as well if true because its fiercest competitor in the Windows Phone 8 space, the HTC 8X, is already being offered in Widget City and maybe in bulk by Christmas time. The scenario will definitely steal a percentage of market buyers who were only looking for a customary Windows 8 phone.

Oh well, its unconfirmed anyway, an open speculation, I don't think Nokia Philippines would want to miss the Windows Phone 8 fever going on around the world... or will they?

US is also among the early countries to receive the phone with AT&T bound Nokia Lumia 920 and Nokia Lumia 820, the Verizon Wireless bound Nokia Lumia 822 and the T-Mobiles Nokia Lumia 810, all packing premium specs and features that only Nokia and Windows Phone 8 could offer.

I've been very vocal about my huge love for the Nokia Lumia 920 naming it my ultimate dreamphone to date because of its Nokia PureView camera technology, capturing five times more light than competitor smartphones for bright pictures without flash indoors or at night and the cutting-edge floating lens stabilization technology, but other than these, other features were also on the frontline of smartphone technology with the likes of built-in wireless charging, PureMotion HD+ display (the best screen to date), the extra sensitive capacitive touchscreen capable of registering touch commands even with the use of gloves, among others. 

The Nokia Lumia 820, Nokia Lumia 810 and Nokia Lumia 822 on the other hand offers exchangeable covers in a range of vibrant colors, including the option to add wireless charging. Like the Nokia Lumia 920, they boast the world's most sensitive touchscreen and Nokia ClearBlack display technology for easy visibility in the brightest sunlight. All phones come with the full suite of Nokia navigation applications, including Nokia City Lens, as well as Nokia Music for unlimited music streamed directly to the phone.

Operators and retailers will announce local pricing and exact availability for each country.

The Nokia Lumia 920 will reach Australia, France, Germany, Hong Kong, India, Italy, Poland, Russia, Saudi Arabia, Thailand,  Turkey, the United Arab Emirates, the UK, the US and Vietnam.

No Philippines yet, hopefully Nokia would double its production for the phones to reach more and more countries by the years end.
