Interesting Info behind the Top 100 most visited sites in the Philippines

Alexa.com constantly tracks the most popular and most visited websites in the world wide web and they have a specific Top 100 lists per country including the Philippines. As I went through the lists, I actually found interesting facts to buzz about, the "intriguing" labeled ones that were highly unexpected, so dive around this facts and be dazzled.

1. Search Engine Sites - The world might have gone crazy over Google but Filipinos shouts Yahoo! more, though there difference is a mile far being Yahoo on number two spot and Google on 3rd, its still a huge statement to declare. On the far 16th spot was Windows Live search and Bing on the 24th. I Google more..

2. Social Networking Sites - Facebook took the front set landing on the number one spot overall followed by Twitter on the 8th, Multiply on the 11th and the once almighty Friendster falling to 12th place. I use to Friendster a lot before but just like most of the online connected Filipinos, I grew tired with it. At the moment, I'm Twitting a lot and crushing Facebook sometimes but my current fab Foursquare didn't make it yet to the top 100, well its getting popular, so I expect it to rate very soon.

3. TV Station war - Well, we've heard claims from Kapamilya, Kapuso and Kapatid that they are number one on ratings game but web traffic tags the Kapuso network with its website GMANews.TV the front runner in the race landing on the 80th spot. The Kapamilya network's ABS-CBNnews.com only landed on the 92nd place. Kapatid network is nowhere to be found. Let the network war reach online TV fanatics, go visit your respective sites now!

4. Print News media - Philippines have 3 major national newspapers and a bunch of locals but among these competing organizations, Philippine Daily Inquirer leads the way landing on the 27th spot while the Philippine Star landed on the far 59th. The rest of the competition failed to make it to the elite 100. Well Philippine Daily Inquirer is number one nationwide so it just reflected online.

5. Online Stores - This really shocked me big time because Sulit.com.ph, a locally suited online store made it way big grabbing the 8th spot overall. Amazon.com, a US base online shop with no local site manage to make it to the second lead by holding the 23rd spot while my fav site, eBay.ph only manage to grabbed 30th spot. AyosDito.ph landed on the 41st, TipidPC.com on the 77th, olx.com.ph on the 78th and the international eBay site on the 79th.

6. Technology site - CNET.com is the only tech site that made it to the list, well this would mean that majority of Filipinos are not techy. That makes me elite then! Wosh!

7. Blogsites - Blogger manage to grab the lead taking the 6th spot while Wordpress was on the 10th. Well, it seemed that Filipinos loved to blog since blogsites notched big.

8. Telecom Networks - No fuss, Smart Telecom is the only company that made it to the Top 100 grabbing the 90th spot. Well considering how Filipinos love cellphones and texting, they don't care much in visiting the website of telecom networks there using. Smart Telecom have 15million active subscribers at the moment but it almost did not make it to the top 100 website. Interesting!

9. Mobilephone Companies - Speaking about cellphones and texting, the only mobilephone company that made it to the list, Apple Inc. on the 71st spot. Well it must have something to do with there online store because Nokia and other mobilephone phone companies did not make it even if Nokia is the number one mobilephone company in the country. Well there is only one sensible thing to do for Nokia to catch up to Apple's web popularity, port there online store locally so people visit them and buy directly from them. Add the music store also and the paid applications of Ovi Store. It will do magic.

10. Banks - Well Filipinos doesn't do online banking much as only one company made it to the Top 100 most visited website, the UnionBank of the Philippines. This bank is even on the tail end among the biggest banks in the country, so what happened to the top banks like Metrobank, BDO, BPI, etc? Maybe Pinoys doesn't trust online banking, I don't rather.

11. Airlines - Even after rigid online booking campaign of two of the biggest airline company in the country, only one made it to the popular's list, Cebu Pacific Air. Well they are not regarded as the number one local airline company for nothing. I love their seat sale! Keep it coming!

12. Sports - Not that Filipinos doesn't like sports, we are sports lovers but not locally catered I believe because NBA.com, an international site made it on the Top 100 lists alone, no other sports site made it to the lists not even PBA or the Philippine Basketball Association. Basketball is the countries national sports but the local Basketball league is thriving.

13. Porn sites - Yes its last but not the lists. Youporn made it to the 60th spot while Redtube on the 100th. Filipinos were naughty but nice!

So there you go folks, Top 100 sites, Pinoy Style! How many sites among the list do you visit often?

Nokia and Yahoo! Annouces Integration Of Web Services

Global strategic alliance enables industry leaders to leverage strengths in e-mail, instant messaging, maps and navigation across PC and mobile devices

New York, NY, USA - Today, Yahoo! and Nokia announced a worldwide strategic alliance to extend the reach of their industry leading online services and offer people rich experiences that keep them connected to their world and the world around them.

Building on more than five years of collaboration, Nokia and Yahoo! ® will leverage each others' strengths in e-mail, instant messaging and maps and navigation services, to provide consumers with access to world-class experiences on both PC and mobile devices.

As part of the alliance:
- Nokia will be the exclusive, global provider of Yahoo!'s maps and navigation services, integrating Ovi Maps across Yahoo! properties, branded as "powered by Ovi."
- Yahoo! will become the exclusive, global provider of Nokia's Ovi Mail and Ovi Chat services branded as "Ovi Mail / Ovi Chat powered by Yahoo!"
- Nokia and Yahoo! plan to work on ID federation between their services, beginning by making it easy for people to use their Ovi user IDs across select Yahoo! properties to easily access the online content and services they need.

"Delivering great user experiences -- both online and on your mobile - is what this alliance is all about," said Olli-Pekka Kallasvuo, CEO, Nokia. "We're enabling millions of Yahoo! customers in key markets including North America to discover the unique capabilities that Ovi Maps brings. Similarly, Yahoo!'s online expertise will bring exciting mail and messaging enhancements to millions of Ovi Mail customers across almost every country around the world, many of whom will have their first Internet experience on their mobile."

"We're excited to expand the reach of our best-in-class Mail and Messenger services, bringing personalized experiences to more people across the mobile web, particularly in emerging markets where we are seeding the next generation of Yahoo! users. At the same time, we believe Nokia's strength and continued investment in maps and navigation will greatly enhance our existing products, enabling us to focus on areas that are core to our business."

Together, Yahoo! and Nokia will continue to deliver compelling Internet experiences that address the core needs of consumers, developers, operators and advertisers. The companies will utilize their respective global distribution advantages and brand recognition across consumer audiences.

Select, co-branded service offerings are expected to become available from the second half of 2010, with global availability expected in 2011.

Nokia And Yahoo Is Cooking Something Exciting!

“Please join Yahoo! CEO Carol Bartz for an exciting announcement about providing global consumers with rich online and mobile experiences, and bringing forward a new era in keeping consumers connected,” the invitation reads.

The event is expected to discuss a partnership between Yahoo and Finnish phone-maker Nokia, in which new certain Nokia devices would ship with built-in Yahoo functionality, such as e-mail, search and various applications.

While the two may not spring to mind as the most natural of partners, each stands to gain from such a partnership — and each could use a boost.

“Nokia and Yahoo, each in their own market, is kind of suffering,” analyst Roger Kay, with Endpoint Technologies. “What you’ve got is Yahoo, [far from its former glory,] being whooped by Google, and while Nokia still leads the handset market, it has a portion of its former phone sales.”

Nokia commanded 34 percent of the global mobile handset market during the first quarter of 2010, but has been criticized for its lack of competitive products in the smartphone space — a space currently dominated by Apple, Research In Motion and Google’s Android OS. Of late, Nokia has worked to turn the situation around with the introduction of devices such as the N8.

In a search for greater robustness, does it make sense to partner with a company in the same position?

“If they teamed with a strong member they’d be the junior partner,” Kay explained. “So in this case they maintain their identities. I think it makes good sense. Nokia gains some functionality on their phones that’s interesting, and I guess what Yahoo gets is more eyeballs and distribution. I don’t know if [Yahoo] would additionally get paid.”

Still, when pressed, Kay hesitated to say the partnership was likely to be a good thing for each side.

“It’s probably not a bad thing,” he offered. “There’s very little risk to trying it. In the end, it makes sense.”

Yahoo Joins The Tweeting Craze!

In its latest attempt to make its Web site more compelling, Yahoo Inc. is plugging its services into the rapidly growing craze of posting short messages, or "tweets," on Twitter.

Although Yahoo planned to announce the Twitter partnership Wednesday, most of the new features won't be available until later this year. Among other things, anyone with a Twitter account will be able to tweet and see the updates of people they're tracking while logged into Yahoo's Web site.

One change occurred Tuesday, when Yahoo started to show a wider range of Twitter updates in its search results - something that Google Inc. and Microsoft Corp. began doing late last year.

Like its rivals, Yahoo is paying privately held Twitter an undisclosed amount of money for better access to its data.

Yahoo previously had been using Twitter's free tools to find tweets that pointed to the latest news about hot topics.

Unlike Google and Microsoft, Yahoo plans to turn its Web site into a tweeting perch. This follows Yahoo's recent commitment to tether its Web site to Facebook, which is even more widely used than Twitter.

Yahoo is hoping that these moves to build a network of social networks will make it easier for people to share information and images on Facebook and Twitter without leaving its Web site. And by giving people more reasons to stick around, Yahoo reasons it will have more chances to show the Internet ads that generate most of its revenue.

By some estimates, Facebook now attracts a bigger and more engaged audience than Yahoo. And Twitter has turned into a major communications channel that distributes an average of 50 million tweets per day, up from 2.5 million per day at the beginning of last year, according to the company's statistics.

The new Facebook connection on Yahoo is supposed to be available before July. Yahoo hasn't specified when people will be able to tweet from its site.
