My Top 10 Phones of 2010

Mobilephones were not alike, they are created distinctly and marketed to different segments of the buying public. Each has its own strength and weakness, and people view them diversely depending on individual’s needs and wants. There is no such thing as a perfect phone for everyone to enjoy.

My Top 10 list is based on what I believe carries overall functionalities, features, specs, services and offered in a price that suffice its function and value. It’s a tough choice having to choose 100 or more Contenders from all range but with the grading system I implemented, I was able to come up with the best of the best this 2010.

10. Samsung S85000 Wave

The phone is the very first device to carry the BADA Operating System (OS), not as outstanding as the leading OS but definitely a force to reckon with. What’s special about this phone is its built quality, specifications and app support, from the Super AMOLED, 1Ghz ARM Cortex A8 processor, DIX/XVid support, steel frame to the very first App Store to offer paid application in the Philippines unlike others where they offer only the FREE ones. At least BADA recognized our capacity to buy premium apps and our right to use one.

9. Nokia X3-02 Touch and Type

My dream form factor factor is a Monobloc QWERTY touch phone and the Nokia X3-02 is the closest at the moment that's why it made to 9th spot, well partly the reason because aside from that, it also has an outstanding specs and feature to boast with a budget friendly price of PhP8,350 the moment. The phone runs an S60v40 Operating system optimized for touch, its WIFI capable, has 5MP camera, Complete Multimedia support (yes, complete with Xvid), Messaging, Social Networking features, great design, superior built quality among other features and services offered by Nokia.

8. Blackberry Curve 8520

Okay, I was a bit skeptical about Blackberries and their hard Business impression Operating system but when I tried using one, I actually find it interesting especially with how things are being implemented. What I notice right away is their sassy interface and the well figured messaging feature. No wonder why socialites and business people use it, they can easily relate to it but the problem was that, it stops right there, you cannot spell FUN on the OS and you certainly cannot insert Youthfulness. The Blackberries were toted to be unreachable but the PhP11,900 defies the norm, it can brought for PhP8,000 straight up giving opportunity for the mass market to experience the boring Blackberry world.

7. N900

The phone is the best way to experience the new Meego Operating system that is why it’s grabbed the 7th spot. Yes it has the Meamo with those entire developer frenzy feature but it’s not as attractive as the mainstream OS’s as it is being marketed before as geek’s phone and not a public smartphone. With the buzz and positive impressions on the Meego OS which is being held as the coolest and the future of modern mobilephones, the N900 automatically attracts since it can be freely upgraded. Oh well it has all the comfort of the current high end phone specs so it’s an “IT” phone of 2010.

6. HTC Desire

The phone is the epitome of sleek User interface (UI) with its eye candy 3D graphics and animation features, coolest of all in the market or should I say, the best at the moment in this category but the best mobilephone phone cannot only be defined by one aspect, it has to be the best of everything that’s why the phone is only 6th on the list. It has only 5MP camera compared to the leader of this category, it doesn’t support DivX and XVid files, its framed in plastic with a stripe of metal, it has less services and feature offered among other imperfections of the phone.

5. Cherry Mobile Nova

The phone is currently being sold at PhP11,490 but it offers heavyweight specs and feature of any other Android phones at the moment. It has the 2.1 (Éclair) version, QUALCOMM MSM 7227 600Mhz, 3.2” HVGA Capacitative Touchscreen, 5MP Camera with Flash, 3.5mm Audio Jack, MicroSD expandable to 32GB. The phone simply costs a third of the current high end Android devices offering the same features less the speed and durability factor and so it made it big on the countdown. This is a living example that high technology doesn’t have to be expensive.

4. Nokia N8

Of all the high end phones at the moment, the Nokia N8 is the only phone that is best in more than ways than one. The most durable cover with its uni-body Anodized Aluminum case and Gorilla glass display, the Camera and camcorder King, the Maps and A-GPS service leader, the zenith of Multimedia support, among the best that the phone and Nokia as a company can offer unlike other phones that is only good in few things, like Operating System’s or User Interface. The problem thought was that it wasn’t for the mass market to own that’s why it only lands on 4th spot.

3. Motorola Milestone XT720

The phone is a good contender to become the best camera phone among the Android breeds in the market at the moment with its 8MP camera, Xenon Flash and 720p video recording. It has an Android Éclair OS, sleek Moto Blur UI, ARM Cortex A8 880 MHz processor, HDMI port among other high end feature yet its only being sold for PhP15,400. Low price would have meant a cut down of features, specs or built quality but this phone did not sacrifice specs and feature much carrying nothing less of a difference among other expensive Androids that is why it made it to the 3rd spot on the list.

2. Nokia E5

The phone is the pinnacle of all Value phones in the market at the moment. With only PhP9,990, buyers could enjoy the best Operating System and User Interface among Non Touch Screen phones, the Symbian 60 version 3 with Feature Pack 2. It has quite a remarkable feature such as 5MP Camera with Dual Flash, capable Multimedia support, Map with unlimited walk and drive navigation, ARM processor with 600MHz, very attractive design in white, good built quality, Office Document Editor among other best specs and services offered with added perk such as the new Contacts UI adding a new user experience, who wouldn’t be attracted with the phone?

1. Nokia C6-01

The phone grabs the top spot because of all the categories I fitted it into, the phone was able to consistently earn attention. It has a good OS, not the best with a verge of small differences from the current leader, has a smooth and sleek User Interface, has a good design, smallish dimension, nearly perfect screen size of 3.2inches in reference to single handed use, good screen display of AMOLED with Clear Black Display Technology, very capable Camera of 8MP Carl Ziess Camera and Dual LED flash, perfect Multimedia player supporting all files, Map with unlimited walk and drive navigation feature among other top of the line services and features, yet offered at an affordable Price. It may not have earn a single top spot on the categories I referred to but its consistency in earning remarkable points on each that why I made it my Top 1 phone of 2010.

So there you go, my Top 10 phones of 2010. As you’ve notice, there were no iPhone 4, Galaxy S among other high end devices released this year, that’s because there price doesn’t fit to the features and specs they offer. They are just smartphones that offer capabilities that any of my Top 10 can offer.
