Nokia announces new Philippine GM and Nokia Lumia 920’s exclusive availability via Smart Telecom

Nokia announces the appointment of Karel Holub as its new General Manager in the Philippines. The Czech native Karel brings to Nokia Philippines an impressive abundance of management expertise from his sixteen-year career in the telecommunications industry – eight of which he spent at Nokia - in relationship management with, developers, operators, distributors and retailers; and an impressive background in tactical planning for promotions and retail merchandising, including marketing communication and delivery of strategic messages across all touch points.

Karel, who prior to this assignment, was the General Manager for South CIS countries based in Kazakhstan, where he contributed greatly in transforming the Nokia mobile phone operations in the emerging markets of Caucasus, Central Asia and Mongolia from export mode to domestic mode. Besides Nokia, Karel has also worked at Mobil.cz, Celadon Group, GOOGGI/Digitania Czech Republic and Vodafone Czech Republic. He is replacing Dharmesh Ghoshalia who chose to move back to Greece for personal reasons.

His current assignment coincides with the launch of the Lumia 920 smartphone and the announcement of SMART Telecoms’ exclusive partnership to carry Nokia’s high-end smartphone.

The Lumia 920, Nokia’s latest offering is now available in the Philippines. The smartphone comes with new features combined with the latest innovations. Nokia fans consider the Lumia 920 a major upgrade from its predecessor.

Nokia’s new flagship phone offers several innovative features: a 4.5 inch screen that uses PureMotion HD+ technology exclusive to Nokia, a 1.5 GHz dual core processor, an 8.7 megapixel camera and Microsoft Windows Phone 8 OS. However, more innovations have been built in to the Lumia 920. Nokia devices were built to last and this is proven in the camera and side buttons found on the phone. Using a hard substance called Zirconium, they are scratch and dirt resistant which guarantees the phone to look like it just came out of the box.

Shaky video and blurry photos are almost non-existent with the 920’s floating lens technology. This means that sudden movement while using the camera synchronizes perfectly with the lens for clear, crisp photos and steady video recordings. Also, Dual LED flash is a thing of the past for the Nokia Lumia 920. Its use of next generation high-power Dual LEDs produces more light when using the camera for low-light environments.

Although wireless charging is an emerging trend for smartphones, the Lumia 920 adds more innovation to this convenience. Using Near Field Communications technology, you can set the phone to start applications while it recharges the battery.

The Lumia 920 gives you the best audio experience by utilizing a multichannel equalizer which you can customize. The innovative addition of Dolby headphone support one the phone adds more kick to the sound experience.

Custom Facebook personalization works well with the Lumia 920. You can use the phone to pick a random picture to display everyday from the number of albums you have on Facebook. Additionally, the Lumia 920 can create a room for for sharing calendars, photos and notes for selected contacts. On top of this, you can also have a private group chat with your selected contacts.

To complement the large storage capacity of the phone, cloud storage is integrated via SkyDrive. This online service provides ample storage for all your multimedia storage needs. Photos and videos will never be lost with this offsite backup feature.
Using a Bluetooth headset is convenient - especially while on the road. While connected to a car audio system, voice commands can be used via the headset to read or ignore SMS messages.

The Nokia Lumia 920 is available in red, yellow, white, and black. The smartphone is currently exclusive to SMART subscribers who want to get the network’s high-end plans. It is currently tagged with a suggested retail price of P26,990 and will be available in Nokia stores and SMART Business Centers nationwide.

Official Philippine Release Date of Nokia Lumia 920 and 820 Delayed Further To Late Q1, 2013

If your eagerly waiting for the Nokia Windows Phone 8 power line-ups, then you'll need to hold on a bit longer because the official and authorize Philippine versions of the Lumia 920 and 820 devices won't be available until late Q1 or March, 2013.

"The reason that we are pushing back the launch date is that it is sometimes necessary to revise delivery schedules based on global product availability", said Nikka Abes, Head of Communications for Nokia Philippines, Malaysia and Singapore. "While we are pleased about the response the phone has been getting from consumers in different parts of the world, we would of course like to apologize to Filipinos who were hoping to get their hands on a Lumia 920 and Lumia 820 sooner and we thank them for their continued patience."

I specifically mentioned official and authorize devices earlier because both phones are now being offered in gray markets for a heftier price. Gray would mean that its unofficial, unauthorized, or unintended by the original manufacturer, meaning, it doesn't have warranties and all.

Well, Nokia really need to solve their production issue fast because they'll miss all the hype that the two phones are currently enjoying, specially that the Mobile World Congress is coming, new smartphones will definitely be announce that might shift market focus. They have at least two months to sort everything up.

Nokia 808 PureView? Nokia Philippines Teases with a Weekend Announcement!

"Something BIG is coming this weekend. What do you think it is, Nokianatics?" This is the phrase with an inset image that Nokia Philippines posted this morning via their official Twitter and Facebook client raising speculations on what it might be.

Baffling, I would say, Nokia Philippines made it sure that their announcement will leave readers bemuse at the same time excited. From the looks of it, the image seems to signify color variants of the Nokia Lumia 900, the Cyan, White, Black and Magenta while it also looks like a by-product of the most powerful cameraphone in the market, the Nokia 808 PureView, being taken with precision and quality.

Well, if its indeed, Nokia Lumia 900, then I think its about time that Nokia Philippines gave it a release date. The phone had already undergone a successful launching event so its high time for it to be available to public.

On the other hand, if its the Nokia 808 PureView, then I think its about time for me to start accruing funds, my blog needs a new and better shooter and a new inspiration.

Since its going to be unveiled this weekend and I'm just so happen to be somewhere in Manila by then, I might be able to witness the event up close as it unfolds. Very excited here, no wait, make that 808-900x excited! Stay tuned! ;D

In stepping up drive to educate underprivileged Filipino kids, Nokia sponsors the First London Philippine Fashion Show Charity Event

Nokia Philippines recently lent support as a major sponsor to the first-ever London Philippine Fashion Show held at the Victoria House Basement in Holborn, London to uphold its commitment to help provide educational support for underprivileged Filipino children,

The fashion show, presented by Prospero World, a UK-based international philanthropy consultancy organization, brought together 15 of the Philippines’ most celebrated fashion designers and local brands to showcase the latest in local fashion design.

Participating in the historic fashion show were renowned Filipino designers Josie Natori, Michael Cinco, Pepito Albert, Randy Ortiz, Rajo Laurel, Lulu Tan Gan, Cary Santiago, Jun Escario, Mich Dulce, Wynn Wynn Ong, Jasper Garvida, Lesley Mobo, Federico de Vera, and Joyce Makitalo, and joined by top local fashion brands Celestina, Bergamo, and Silk Cocoon.

Nokia Philippines supported the event for the benefit of The Ayala Foundation’s Centre of Excellence in State Supported Elementary Education (CENTEX) project, a program which aims to support the education of talented but disadvantaged Filipino children in the Metro Manila area.

“Nokia has always prioritized education as a main thrust of its corporate social responsibility. Here in the Philippines, there is a lot to be done to help underprivileged kids. The company believes that every Filipino child deserves a fair chance at education so that they can build a bright future for themselves,” said Dharmesh Goshalia, general manager and head of sales of Nokia Philippines.

The successful event raised £160,000 from tickets and donations, as well as auctions of antiques, fashion items, and Asian travel packages. Part of the funds were raised by a group of 12 ‘sponsored models’ who are actually business professionals, sharing the catwalk with the real models. One of the ‘sponsored models’ was Alice Motte-Munoz, who is half-Filipina, half-French. The raised funds will be able to support the education of 500 children under the CENTEX education program.

Launched in 1998, the CENTEX program aims to provide high-quality education to bright students from the poorest backgrounds in the Philippines. The program gives selected kids an outstanding education from age 5 to 12 years. To date, the project helps 1,000 children a year, at a cost of $500 per child/school year. It currently works with two state schools in Manila and Batangas, and has consistently topped rankings for the National Achievement Tests in the country. CENTEX also actively supports its alumni by helping them secure scholarships in top high schools, colleges and universities.

The CENTEX program is just one of the efforts being supported by Nokia Philippines that aims to provide educational support to Filipino kids. Among its ongoing efforts is the Text2Teach program, a project it conceptualized in 2004 together with other partners and Ayala Foundation. Text2Teach uses mobile phones as a tool to make learning more fun and effective for grades 5 and 6 students. To date, almost 57,000 students in public elementary schools are learning using mobile technology. Phase 4 of the program is ongoing with an objective to develop new curriculum-based content, reach far-flung areas, enhance teacher training, and upgrade existing programs.

Nokia Philippines Launching Something BIG Tomorrow!

Got an invite to a launching event of Nokia Philippines tomorrow, June 9, 2o11, Thursday somewhere in Makati City. It did not provide any other details except that its something doubly huge to look forward to. Might be a new device or service though I already know what it is, I'm just not going to share it because it's meant to be a surprise! Kidding aside. ;)
Anyways, I wont be able to make it because its an abrupt announcement. It will cost me a lot if I'm going to book a flight for Manila three days before travel. Maybe next time they could inform me two weeks before the event so I could secure cheap flights from where I am.

So going back to the question, what will Nokia Philippines launched this Thursday? Try your persuading prowess on the comments section, might be able to share info's!

CodeSpark: A Globe Telecom and Nokia Project Aimed To Innovate Connectivity Among Filipinos

Nokia Philippines, Forum Nokia and Globe Telecom launched a program for mobile developers to exhibit their ability and creativity in designing applications especially for the Philippine market. Kicked off last June 16, 2010, CondeSpark encourages Filipino developers on building innovative applications for the Nokia flatform to get a chance to distribute their creations through Globe and Nokia’s Ovi Store.

CodeSpark is led by Globelabs, a department in Globe Telecom created in 2008 to immerse the company and its partners with future technologies. With the theme “Innovating for the connected Filipino”, CodeSpark encourages mobile developers to design applications that would appeal to domestic taste and cater to the local preferences of the market. The program aims to celebrate Filipino talent and ingenuity as well as the presence in the online community. Thus, the applications should be designed to allow Filipinos to connect to one another through the internet.
Open to members of Globe Labs’ developer community which includes individuals and groups, companies and members of the academe, the application should make use of GPRS or 3G technology. In this year’s CodeSpark, the search is on for the application that can be implemented on Nokia devices using Java MIDP 2.0 or S60 Nokia devices using Qt/C++

Filipino developers can register anytime until September 3, 2010 and will be given three months to build their mobile applications. All entries will be posted at the Philippine Ovi Store in September 8, 2010 and at the myGlobe Free Apps for four months, making it available to Globe subscribers for free. The application must pass the Ovi Store Quality Assurance process prior to application. Also, the entries must pass the Globe Fair Use Policy on Mobile and Broadband before posting.

The awarding of the winner of CodeSpark is on September 24, 2010. The best mobile application for each of the two categories will be distributed through Ovi Store and myGlobe Free Apps. Four winningteams will be chosen with two winners from each categories, with new Nokia S60/Meamo and P25,000 cash price.
