Thoughts, Nokia World 2011

So as a customary, it's time to judge one of the biggest event in the mobilephone and tech world.

To answer to the question I posted hours before the event, whether it will shocked or frustrate, I could say that it say that its 70:30, 70 being shocked and 30 being frustrated, thats about 10% down from the previous year. Why, how, what, where, read on for the details.

HIT SHOCKED

- It’s fair to say that Nokia did an excellent job in the overall presentation, keynotes of speakers were overwhelming, the reactions from the audience, the substantial effort that they put into to make it credible and exciting. The Nokia magic is there and twice potent than the last year. Everyone deserve a pat in the back, congratulations to all.

- Information’s and tidbits being shared every now and then like the number of downloads on Nokia Store per day which have now reached 10million plus is a substantial number that cannot be ignored by competitors. Yes, this will not level up to AppStore yet but with Android, given the fact that Nokia is the only manufacturer that carries it, its a big accomplishment as compared to the former whose downloads comes from phones from different manufactures. If competing manucturers will create there own appStore except the successful Apple Store of course and the dismal Bada app store of Samsung, can it surpass Nokia Store?

- Nokia coming up with a very competitive powerful smartphones is a big hit specially that it targets areas where the company is strongest. The entry level and midtier market with the stylish, affordable yet no compromise Asha line up. I really like the looks of the Nokia Asha 303. It's something refreshing and fun. The rest of the Asha line up brought a unique combination of features and specs that were suited to peoples varied needs. I also like the effort of Nokia to bring outstanding applications like Angry birds down to S40 devices. This would mean that Nokia gave importance to the majority of the smartphone buyers, the mass market.
- The Nokia Kenetic is superlative and very promising. It is a phone with flexible screen display and can be controlled by bending, twisting and squeezing the phone. The guys over at Nokia Conversations created a video about it which I embedded below. Watch and see how this technology can change mobility in the future. Impressive technology!

- Nokia Purity Stereo Headsets with Monster inside is a welcome development. Being a music lover since birth, I would love to hear them loud, crisp and clear on my mobilephone via an outstanding stereo headset develop by one of the leading companies in headset technology.
- And speaking of Music, who would ever missed the newest service that brings a seamless and unlimited access to millions of songs, the Nokia Music. Its an application on the Nokia Windows Phone that integrates features like Mix Radio and Gig Finder under one application. What I like in this app is its ability to download a playlist online and play it afterwards offline then play everything by just one click on the Windows Phone tile, super convenient I would say.

MESS FRUSTRATION ;(

- As you've notice, I haven't mentioned about the Lumia line up on the Hit Lists, thats because I find it a little disappointing. First and foremost, Nokia failed to come up with a hardware design that is unique to the line up. For instance, the Lumia 800 is a copy cat of Nokia N9 and the Lumia 710 resembles that of a Nokia 603. As much I like Nokia N9's design and craft which I by the way regarded as the most beautiful smartphone to date, Lumia 800 is just a mere copy and I dislike the thought. The reason why I hate iPhone was that they keep on coming with the same looks over and over again as if there stupid minds wont innovate, I hope Nokia won't fall on the same category. Nokia would have come up with another design that is exclusive to the line up.
- I would have love to see the Nokia N8 successor take the center stage. Well the phone is unparallelled to date as the imaging King but I would love to see more evolution on camera phones. A Windows Phone carrying one maybe?

- I'm still waiting for the announcement of additional Nokia services like movies to be sold via Nokia store or another application but it didn't materialize. Entertainment package would have been complete with this service addition together with Nokia Music and the Xbox Live. Nokia also needs to expand their existing Nokia Store services to other countries like a paid application offering for Philippines maybe?

- Tablet-less. I'm routing to buy one to add to my gadget collection but Nokia haven't created one yet. I might not be able to wait a little longer, they have to move fast.

So, there you go folks, my grade for this years Nokia World. Hopefully Nokia could come up with a better one next time. How about you? What grade will you give to the recently concluded Nokia World 2011? Feel free to comment below!

Nokia World 2011, Will Shocked or Frustrate?

Time to answer the yearly question again Mates, as Nokia World 2011 is about to begin in about 12 hours! Londoners will have to succumbed another round of tech wave as mobilephone enthusiasts, developers, bloggers and competitors invades the city to witness a show of smartphone might, Finnish style.

Nokia World has been very exciting ever since but whats so different this year is path, a clear and concise one that the company wants to pursue. Gone were feeling of apprehensions and doubts on wither the Meego Operating System works or not, nor will they able to sustain growth, or create a disruptive technology that impress, because the company weathered them all by racking an Operating System that has been well tested, the Windows Phone, by remaining on top of the market amidst massive attacks from competitors, and by creating the groundbreaking and outstanding Harmattan User Interface on top of Meego.

Excited? I am, very much because everything is going well for the company, not mention the leaks and hearsay's going around lately about devices which are said to be announced in the event.

For instance, the Nokia Sea Ray, a Windows Phone Mango powered device with 1.4GHz processor and 8MP camera, nor the Nokia Sabre, another Windows Phone with 3.5 inches screen, 8MP camera, then finally Nokia Sun which is a cut down version of everything to cater to the mid-market.

Bunch of Symbian Belle updates might also be announced that will power the next camera king, the Nokia N8 successor, or some Symbian Belle devices with jaw dropping price.

Meltimi might also be introduce to the world. Rumor has it that the Operating System is Linux base and will replace the S40 in the low end range.

Then the rest will be services like Nokia Money, Nokia Movies, NFC related apps, or tools that would make a difference particularly in the world countries.
So back to the question, will this years Nokia World event shocked or frustrate? I would say both, it will shocked the mobilephone world with Nokia's new technology advancements and it will also frustrate competitors at the same time because whether they like it or not, Nokia is back and will reclaim its rightful place in the industry.

Nokia N9 Journal: Day 1, The Culture Shock

11:40 Hours, +8 GMT, October 15, 2011

It was lunch break at school when I decided to call DHL Ozamis to check if my package had arrive, I’ve been expecting it since Thursday after I received an email confirmation that Nokia N9 was on the way. To my utmost luck, it was indeed within reach and so without a blink, I hurriedly went to the DHL office to pick it up.

I then head back to school and join my classmates in the canteen to eat lunch. When I arrive, they were asking me why I was rushing to leave and then notice the package I was holding and started asking about it. I told them it was a trial device and the flood of questions followed that lead me to open the package to answer all there questions. I then took the Nokia N9 out of the box and the culture shock begun, first on my part, because the phone was very stunning, it was like, is this a phone or heaven, kidding aside ;) but really, it looks so hot with the all black screen against a blue background and the floating screen impression was outstanding. It was also remarkably thin compared to Nokia N8 that I was using that time.
Culture shock number #2, my classmates reactions, they were like who the hell was this handsome guy really and why he has that gorgeous phone. ;D Okay my classmates have no idea about my blog and my tech hobby so it was kinda shocking for them. I then pass the phone for everyone and gauge their reaction to it. Elated, yes, ecstatic, maybe but most were restless to ask information’s about the phone as to where they can buy, the price, the features and everything. I told them that it’s not yet available in the country at the moment and that Smart Telecom is yet to offer the phone for PhP3,500 per month on unlimited data plan. Hysteria continued for a while until we head back to the classroom to take our final exam in two subjects.

19:30 Hours, +8 GMT, October 15, 2011

Got home late from a long brain draining day but very thrilled because I can finally start playing with the phone. I didn’t have the time to turn it on earlier because my classmates were asking a lot of questions.

Unlike before that I’m all prepared to use my upcoming trial phones by reading their manual in advance, I wasn’t able to do so with Nokia N9 because I was so busy studying for my upcoming final exams. This lead me to another surprise (Culture Shock #3), the phone uses a microSIM! I would have drop by Globe Telecom to get myself one for my Postpaid line if I knew about it earlier. I have no choice but to use the phone without one.

I also took the quick guide out of the box because I have no idea how to turn it on with no power button signs anywhere. FYI, it was located on the right side below the volume keys which also serves as the lock and unlock key.
Culture Shock #4, the welcome screen has animated effects!! The circle breathing lights, the blinking Nokia Logo, and the wave graphics in the end, etc, a very much welcome addition to Nokia’s interface. The screen display was beautiful, the black is very deep creating an illuminating effect to the colored icons. Its the outcome of ClearBlack Display technology of Nokia on top of AMOLED that I have not fully appreciate before not until now that it complements well to N9’s screen design.

Culture Shock #5, the pleasurable swiping, I call it the ultimate swiping experience giving users a cozy feeling of wanting to do it over and over again. Scientifically calculated I would say and very much studied.

Culture Shock #6, the fluidity and simplicity of the User Interface, it’s very, very easy to navigate, no ifs and buts. It wasn’t like other existing OS that you need to press lots of buttons just to navigate around.

20:30 Hours, +8 GMT, October 15, 2011

I started setting the phone to my desired format. Being very different from Symbian, I was a bit disoriented on the process. Setting the date and time was very cool with the circle dialer, while the rest of the needed information can easily be figured. Then as what I normally do with new phones, I went directly to software updates to check if I’m using the latest one but I couldn’t find the app that will check it, what the phone has was only for application updates. The phone also doesn’t have a theme feature, only wallpapers, but this doesn't matter though, the black background of the phone does all the magic. You can set up everything easily like eMail accounts, RSS feed, Twitter, Facebook among others. Live feeds of the accounts set will come out on the Events view.

The phone was never short of animations as it can be found all over the interface like the swiping in between view panels, opening of apps, inactivating apps among others. I do suggest adding more though to make it very lively when use.

22:30 Hours, +8 GMT, October 15, 2011

Sent my very first tweet from the phone announcing to the world that I got a hand on the coolest smartphone in the world. The twitter app uses the virtual keypad of the phone making it my very first try. Well, all I can say is that I miss the SWYPE of my Nokia N8. But don’t get me wrong here, N9 has a good virtual keypad for messaging, it’s just that SWYPE is better. Text input has also a predictive text with the ability to add words on the phones dictionary with just one click, much better actually compared to the proprietor virtual keypad of Symbian. The buttons were finely space but I still get miss clicks.

23:00 Hours, +8 GMT, October 15, 2011

Hit bed early for a much needed rest because I went to bed 3AM the other night. More of the Nokia N9 journal coming up disclosing everything about the phone. If you have questions or violent reactions, feel free to comment.

Why am I excited about Nokia World 2011?

This is my third year that I’ve been actively blogging about mobilephones, Nokia in particular, gadgets, life in excerpts and all excess baggage in between and my second time to witnessed Nokia World from a distance, needless to say, I’m part of the few who looks forward to the event being a Nokia enthusiast and a technology buff.
So back to the question, in particular, why Nokia World 2011? Well, I got 3 H’s for you.

1. Happiness – It will be the perfect place and time to celebrate and just be happy for Nokia who have stood ground amidst all the trials they encountered this year. The journey have been long and excruciating for the company especially during the early months of 2010 where they’ve decided to give up a home grown Operating System that commends the majority of the world’s smartphone devices leaving lots of solid followers behind. It was then a sad day to a lot of people and to me who fought and championed Symbian to my best ability. The changed was inevitable to give way to the future and to innovation but hose were the days, as Nokia prepares to commence a new chapter of its quest, happiness looms in minds of people who stood ground with them, standing proud.

2. Humble – The art of seduction, in Nokia World 2011, the world will witness the showcase of finesse, ingenuity and skills to leverage the company’s comeback to glory, from the most intricate detail of device’s impressive designs and artistry, relevance of services to be offered, to brilliant market strategies. The event is expected to be the most elaborate and the most vigorous approach to impress the smartphone world again, once and for all.

3. Heart – Blame, guilt, remorse, not in the upcoming Nokia event as the world will bear witness to truth, faith and determination. Business, competition and life in general is not at all easy, it’s full of difficulties and challenges, for a mighty company or a person in particular, to accept failures emanates strong will and strength, the true measure of a born leader. In Nokia world, the roaring of a once wounded lion will be heard and it will come deep from the heart.

To the people behind Nokia World 2011, good luck, stand proud and God speed.

The Nokia N9 Journal: First Impression, 200˚C On Hotness Meter

Nokia had never stop innovating its hardware designs as it created yet another run away winner with the simple yet potently captivating Nokia N9.

The phone is a pure standout, it looks enigmatic with its deep black dominated screen facade against a playful and colorful background cover making the screen look afloat. The brilliantly thought curve Gorilla glass display also made the magic possible by protruding the screen up. Such impression was boasted further by a minimalist theme with no glimpse of shortcut buttons whatsoever on the screen, the beauty of simplicity on its finest.
The phones simplistic design continues to the rest of the phones angle with no buttons on the left side, a silver coated volume rocker and lock key on the right, loudspeaker on the button, two excellent designed covers for the USB port and MicroSIM card slot on top and the camera and LED flash at the back.

The phone bodes perfectly well on the hand with its thin dimension and curve sides. Made only of high quality polycarbonate, the phone is not as classy and sturdy to hold than that of E7's and N8's anodized aluminum but nonetheless its still very solid because of its single body design. You can never see any major divisions on the phones cover anywhere, a brilliant piece of craft.
Turning the phone on is equally as impressive, I've been ranting about Nokia being to scanty on animations on Symbian, well, the welcome screen teases with its breathing graphics, finally! The ClearBlack Display technology on top of the AMOLED adds more to the phones dazzling array.

The phones user interface is the easiest among the phones I've tried. All users have to so is swipe between the three screens and that's it, users can even expertly navigate around the phone within 10 minutes or less. Its also very responsive, the fastest that I've tried so far. The curve glass mentioned earlier makes swiping pleasurable like it was scientifically calculated to give such impression, very clever.
Overall, I'm very impress with the phone so far, its the most beautiful piece of mobile technology I've encounter , to mention iPhone 4, Galaxy S, Sony Ericsson Arc among others. If only design makes a phone ultimate, then this phone will rule them all but its not, and that I need to find out as I dig dipper to the phone features.

As of the moment, enjoy this early pic's of the Royal Hotness at 200˚C tipping point.
