Top 10 Mobilephones of 2012

It’s time again for the dreaded yearly countdown of the Top 10 best mobilephones ladies and gentlemen, as we capped the year 2012. It was a very tough year in the mobilephone space as competition got so fierce. Most of the manufacturing companies gave all their best to make a difference but only 10 made it to the elite list. Could it be as mentally challenging or emotionally disturbing just like before? Read on…

10. Samsung Galaxy Beam

Samsung had been known lately to be widely experimental in terms of product offerings, well, this particular device perfectly describes that since its the very first smartphone to have a built in projector. Its definitely not ideal and the market agrees since this device didn't sell well enough but for the sake of trying everything to distance themself from the competition, I gave the phone a spot on my top 10 list.

9. Nokia Asha 309

As I warned earlier, this post is going to be mentally challenging, how in the world could an low-tier device take a prime spot on my top 10, simple, value for the money. With its current market price, buyers get to enjoy a solid and stylish device, 1Ghz processor, Capacitive Touchscreen, Wi-Fi, among others, but the winning punch didn't come from the specs and features, but on the 40 free premium EA games worth equally the same as the phone's price, meaning, users get double value for their money. This is a living proof that total entertainment phone should not be expensive and unreachable for the mass market.

8. Samsung Galaxy S3

One of the easiest choice on the top 10 I believe since the phone offers superior specs, but it only landed on the 8th spot because of its fragile design and construction. This is the kind of phone that users wont dare dropping because it will surely break their heart and pocket. I would describe it more as a torture device than something to enjoy upon since users will continuously get hunted by its flimsiness.

7. Microsoft Surface

I think I need to explain this over again, why my top 10 lists includes tablets being not a phone specs-wise, well, tablets can be use to call anybody via Skype or other social applications so its a phone in technical sense. Confuse? I am too until now but anyways, Microsoft Surface made it to the lists primarily because of the Windows 8 RT interface, looking so modern and sleek. Plus the fact that it combines tablet and laptop functionality, users could enjoy the best of both worlds. If theirs one device that I want this time around, it would be the Surface tablet so I could trash off my nasty and defective Ainol Novo Aurora 2 and my one year old latop.

6. Apple iPhone 5

Another easy choice here being made superior hardware-wise with a top class software, but even so, it only made it to number 6 on my best lists. Why? Its overprice!! If I can do everything it offers on another affordable phone, then why is this price expensively? If the reason would be that its Apple, then they're seriously fucked-up and they need to seek medical help from a psychologist.

5. Motorola DROID RAZR MAXX HD

Power is everything, a smartphone is as worthless as a brick if it doesn't have the energy needed to power it on. Well, this phone holds the record for having the longest battery life in actuality reaching up to 13 hours under rigid use. Aside from that, the phone had all the equally competitive specs and price so its a double win.

4. Motorola Fire Pro

My dream form factor laid to the pedestal, the main reason why this phone made it to as far as #4 on the best lists. I've always been raving for a touch and type candybar phone with mechanical QWERTY, well the phone offers that along with its attractive design, 3.1 inch capacitive touchscreen, 1GHz processor, among the rest of the boos and buzz of Android Operating System.

3. Apple iPad Mini

Ideal size + solid construction + refutable operating system + fair price = #4 on my best lists. The device is definitely a charmer by all means. This is the first Apple device that makes sense, its half the price of the iPhone 5 yet it could do fairly more except telecom network calls.

2. Nokia Lumia 920

Stylish breakthrough design, excellent built and construction, ultramodern wireless charging technology, superior PureView Camera with floating lens stabilization, high-caliber PureMotion HD+ with extra sensitive capacitive touchscreen, etc., no doubt that its called the most innovative mobile phone to date. Paired it up with the fresh Windows Phone 8 operating system and unparalleled Nokia App Services like Nokia Maps, Nokia Drive, Nokia City Lens, the device is unbeatable and could hovers easily above the competition but it missed the top spot, why? The #1 spot had the answer.

1. Nokia 808 PureView

The phone had its share of breakthrough technology no doubt, the high-resolution 41 megapixel sensor, new pixel oversampling technology, full HD 1080p video recording and playback with 4X lossless zoom, Nokia Rich Recording enabling audio recording at CD-like levels of quality, Dolby Digital Plus, among others, but combining all these still cannot topple Lumia 920's innovative strides, now, what makes this phone so special that it took the #1 spot? Oh well, the replaceable battery and the memory card slot! For a device to be used as a camera replacement which is power draining in most times, as simple as a spare battery/batteries plays big in the equation since users cannot afford to run empty amidst important once in a lifetime events. As I mentioned earlier, power is the key to phones greatness, the 808 PureView happened to have a back up.

Comments and violent reactions are welcome!

Fun of Sharing Photos Socially? Nokia Made It Easy For Users!

Before, people would store and share their photos using physical albums. The process of taking, processing, printing and sticking photos in an album would take weeks. It was not until the 80s that digitalization of photography was introduced. People were then able to hand over a CD of images or attach a photo file by email. Then the evolution of internet opened more ways of sharing photos and videos online. Blogging allowed people to post photos and views of just about anything.

In 2000, the first camera phones appeared, followed by the first MMS-capable mobile phones. This started the trend of mobile photo sharing. Contributing greatly to this phenomenon was Nokia, the world’s biggest camera manufacturer. It has continuously presented numerous devices that have built-in cameras and mobile sharing capabilities.

Nowadays, people are getting into the trend of sharing photos via online albums, Facebook posts and picture messages. A day won’t go by without them presenting pictures of how great their day was or something that interests them. This fad has become more prevalent since the discovery of the ease and convenience of uploading and sharing photos through mobile phones.

Based upon research from Nokia’s Future Trends team, which tracks emerging trends in mobility, people use photos to let others know who they are and what great lives they have. Photo sharing websites and social networks like Facebook and Twitter were born from this need. Social media photos were eventually transformed into online scrapbooks and timelines so everyone knows you are leading lives that are happy and fulfilled.

To keep up with the growing trend, Nokia made another milestone in image technology with their new Nokia 808 PureView. This groundbreaking smartphone captures your everyday moments with its world-class Carl Zeiss 41MP lens and then transforms photos into 5MP images that can be instantly and easily shared.

You can make your photos stand out in a creative way with Nokia Store offered apps such as Photofunia and Camera Lover Pack by adding effects and props to it before photo capture and instantly share them to your friends through mail or to your social networks.

With Nokia set to deliver more phones enriched with image technology and apps to enhance photos, expect to see more unique and original ways to use and share photos.

Nokia 808 PureView, Tips and Tricks

The phone is a powerful camera device alright but aside from having a humongous 41MP camera sensor, high-performance Carl Zeiss optics, new pixel oversampling technology, full HD 1080p video recording and playback with 4X lossless zoom, Nokia Rich Recording, Xenon and LED Flash, a Dolby Digital Plus for 5.1 channel surround sound playback among the rest of its camera and video specifications, the phone also has a superior features and menu on par with professional DSLR cameras.

CAMERA MODES

The Nokia 808 PureView camera is designed to be fast and smooth right out of the box. Just a single long press of the camera key at the top right will snap a picture – even when the phone is locked. This is the easiest way to take a photo, but
you can also set a number of different modes:

a. Automatic mode
This is the camera default mode and is ideal for most everyday photo-taking situations.

b. Scenes mode
In Scenes mode, you can choose from a number of pre-defined scenes for which the settings have been optimized: Landscape, Close-up, Portrait, Sports, Night, Night portrait, Spotlight and Snow.

c. Creative mode
Creative mode gives you freedom to influence all the key parameters used in capturing photos. With a long press on the screen you can choose from the following pre-defined focus modes:
• Infinity: Recommended for taking images of scenery, so subjects far away will appear sharp. Can also be used for fast-moving subjects more than 10 metres away
• Hyperfocal: Subjects beyond 2 metres away will appear reasonably sharp. Recommended for situations where subjects are at different distances from the camera, e.g. a football match
• Close-up: Subjects at 15 cm-40 cm away will appear sharp
• Automatic: The default focus setting

Note: When using automatic or close-up modes, a short tap on the screen will lock the focus to the selected point.

EXPOSURE COMPENSATION

In Creative mode, you can verify the exposure before taking a picture with the help of the live histogram that becomes visible when you press the exposure compensation icon on the left side of the screen.

For the best results, photos should be exposed according to the brightest part of the image, as blown out whites don’t look good. In the case of very high contrast scenes, it is advisable to even out the contrast with fill-in flash. Note that half pressing the mechanical shutter key at the top of the phone will lock the auto exposure.

WHITE BALANCE

In Creative mode, you can adjust the white balance with the help of several pre-
defined settings: Sunny, Automatic, Cloudy, Incandescent and Fluorescent. It is advisable to use the manual white balance settings if the automatic settings do not provide pleasing results.

ISO (LOW LIGHT)

In Creative mode, you can select the ISO setting to be anything from 50 to 1600. The higher the ISO setting, the brighter the picture is under low-light conditions. It is also possible to set the ISO on automatic.

The best possible low-light performance is achieved when the camera is in PureView mode at 2/3, 5 or 8 megapixels. To allow exposure times of up to 2.7 seconds and to take “noise free” pictures in low light conditions, you can manually set the ISO low (e.g. 50). For the best results, it is recommended to use a tripod or similar support, or to select Auto ISO or Night mode.

Flash is usable up to a distance of 3-4 metres.

NEUTRAL DENSITY (ND) FILTER

Manually enabling the ND Filter makes it possible to take images with a motion blur effect, for example. The ND Filter can be manually enabled when the Nokia 808 PureView is in Creative mode.

When the ND Filter is manually enabled and the ISO value is manually set at a low value (such as 50), the camera will use long exposure times (up to 2.7 seconds) – even in bright conditions.

If the ND filter is manually disabled in bright conditions, the camera will use very short exposure times. This makes it possible to freeze rapidly moving subjects, although limited overexposure can take place.

ZOOM

With the Nokia 808 PureView it is possible to zoom without diminishing resolution. The magnitude of the zoom depends on the resolution, but the zoom is always lossless and for 5 megapixel output resolution you can zoom up to 3x.

Zooming is done by sliding your finger across the screen in a vertical direction. The camera must be set to 2/3, 5 or 8 megapixel resolution in order to
use the zoom function.

For the best image quality, it is recommended only to zoom in daylight.

CLOSE-UP

You can select the pre-defined Close-up settings from the side bar in Scenes mode, or with a long-press on the phone screen when in Creative mode.

For the best possible close-up pictures, use the 5 megapixel PureView mode with the maximum 3x zoom. Flash can be used at a distance of approximately 15 cm.

BOKEH EFFECT

The bokeh effect, or background blur, is a highly valued feature among portrait and macro photographers, as it allows you to focus on a specific subject in a photo. The Nokia 808 PureView has SLR like bokeh thanks to its very long focal length of 8.02 mm. Typical mobile phone cameras have a focal length of 4 mm.

The longer the distance between your subject and the background, the more powerful the bokeh effect. For the optimal bokeh effect, the subject should be less than 0.5 metres away from the camera.

VIDEO

You can select video mode from the top right of the screen when the phone is in camera mode.

By selecting Continuous autofocus at the bottom left of the screen, the video camera will automatically track the subject located in the center frame. You can also tap the screen to select and lock an area of focus.

Under lower-lighting conditions, you can also use the additional LED video light, which is useful up to a distance of approximately one meter.

You can select between three different resolutions(including FullHD) for shooting video – all of which have lossless zoom that can be operated by
sliding your finger across the screen.

Reserve A Nokia 808 PureView At A Nearby Nokia Flagship Stores Now!

A quick response here from Nokia Philippines, yesterday, I wrote about the phone being removed from CMK website due to unavailability of units (read the story here), now they tweeted via their official @NokiaPilipinas account that the phone is nearly on sale with reservations being accepted in Nokia Flagship stores across the country.

I believe they need to initiate reservation because they only have limited stocks at hand, being so confirmed by another tweet announcing the availability of more stocks in July.

Well at least they were doing something to fast tract the phones market availability, it’s been almost 4 months since its announcement at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, now it had out pass the media frenzy with new phones being announced left and right. Why can’t Nokia imitate what Apple and Samsung are doing with their phones, iPhone 4S and Galaxy S3 were both release in the market within 2-4 weeks after announcement with a support from two of the country’s biggest network, Smart and Globe.

Anyways, the official standard price of the phone is PhP26,590 with no specific date of release just yet for reserved ones. It would be much appreciated as well if the phone will be offered by either Globe or Smart for installment plans.

Nokia 808 PureView, Pulled out in Stores?

It was just three days ago when online mobilephone shop CMK posted the availability of Nokia 808 PureView on their site, now they scraped it off the list foiling a claim that it is officially available in the Philippines.

My mind was in frenzy when I've read about its availability, in one side, of thinking of ways to scout for funds fast so I can buy myself one ahead of everyone else, on the other, of facing a reality that the phone is beyond impossibility, that I definitely can't raise that amount in a year or so relying on my salary alone. There can never be more crazier than these, mind you!

Anyways, back to the store, according to the SMS I received from them, the Nokia 808 PureView is temporarily unavailable because there supplier cannot get more units. Well, I want to believe that they run out of available units other than Nokia preventing them from selling it ahead of the July launched. Either ways, I still commend them from pressing an early availability, its should have been what Nokia had done with a super hot phone like Nokia 808 PureView, to make it available to the public a.s.a.p after announcement like other manufacturers does with there high end phones.

Nokia 808 PureView, The Inclusive Apps

Or should I say the unofficial inclusive applications of a Nokia 808 PureView having use a prototype version of the phone. These apps could be changed or removed in the final software version but nonetheless still worth featuring on the blog.

I didn't have enough time though to open all since I have to cover 3 other phones but somehow I’m already familiar with some of them.

1. Silent Film Director

The name of the app speaks for itself, it’s a kind of application that would allow users to create a movie or video directly on the phone. With its superior camcorder feature, the phone is a potent device for making independent films and movies. Well, I'm seriously considering to make one if I get to own the phone, I'm a big movie fan and it would be best to challenge my artistic self every ones in a while.

2. DLNA Play

Still related to the phones ability to shoot excellent still images and videos, the app allows easy syncing and playing of files to any DLNA compatible devices and share them to a wider audience. Oh well, I don't have any of these devices in the house so I probably won't be able to use it.

3. Joikuspot

The phone has the Joikuspot application that allows the phone to become a Hotspot and share its data connection to other WIFI capable devices. This is a third party application and sold individually to other Symbian device, I'm not sure if it will be offered free on the phone. Joikuspot is Symbian’s answer to the tethering capability of iPhones and select Windows Phone and Android devices.

4. Angry Birds
5. Asphalt 6
6. Block Breaker
7. Bounce
8. Let’s Golf 2

Quite a number of games on the phone, these made the kid part of me very happy but I'm not sure if they are full versions of the game. I predict that I can only play at least two of these games religiously. I don't really play much on my phones lately except in really boring circumstances.

Well, that’s about it folks! Then again I have to remind everyone that the phone is not the retail version so there might be a lot of changes on the apps line-up. Looking forward to try all of this individually given a chance or when I get to buy one in the future. (Cross my finger!)

Nokia 808 PureView, The Two Hour Encounter

It's not very obvious that I'm head over heels longing for this phone ever since it was announced at the Mobile World Congress 2012. For someone who relies on a handy cameraphone to scout and capture blog stories, the monstrous 41MP carrying Nokia 808 PureView is heaven sent.

First Impression, most probably the only blog post thats adequate enough for a two hour encounter, but nonetheless, I'm very thankful that I had the chance, not everyone is given a moment to play around with the phone at this early stage. Also, the unit that I tried was a Prototype, meaning it wasn't the final version software-wise other than the hardware so I could only share limited information about it, but hopefully I will be able to get a review unit very soon.

So let’s begin with the Hardware...

The Nokia 808 PureView is one of the most beautiful phones I've seen up close. It was made to draw people’s attention with its intricate design and construction. The white version looks gorgeous and classy up front with its deep black screen facade brought about by the ClearBlack Display technology and the white frame that surrounds it, while the back part imparts an excellent design spectacle. Nokia designers were able to come up with a perfect and artsy guise to complement the thick and protruding 41MP camera to the phone's overall look, an excellent move and a huge leap forward compared to the Nokia N8. The front screen display was somewhat contoured but wasn’t as curve as the display design in the Nokia N9 or the Nokia Lumia 800 that gives a pleasurable swipe.

Holding it in the hand gives a solid and elegant impression. Built quality is decent with its high grade plastic cover; sturdiness is prominent even in the absence of any metal components and its lighter to hold. If you're somehow looking for a phone with an almost perfect grip, then this is the very device on my top list. I have not hold a mobilephone as comfortable and as satisfying as the Nokia 808 PureView, the phone’s 123.9 x 60.2 x 13.9 mm dimension and curve back cover is matchless compared the confusing square design of iPhone 4S or the humongous width of the Galaxy S3.

Software and User Interface

As mentioned earlier, the phone is a prototype version but from the looks of it, the software, Symbian Belle Feature Pack 2, had already manifested a different level of user experience, a smoother, faster and fluid one compared to the current version on my Nokia N8. It was like using a greatly improved operating system; no more freezing of frames when scrolling application up and down at the menu page; no more lags in swiping Homescreen left to right; no more delays in opening apps, among others. All it had is a slick and continues handling of touch commands.

Of all the operating system in the market at the moment, only Symbian is developing internally and remarkably. I’m very positive that it can trump the top two leading OS at the moment when it comes to user interface, the iOS and Windows Phone, if it will be continuously developed. Other changes to the current version include new widgets, more interactive settings and a better system app processing.

Camera

So, just how good and worthy the camera is with its monstrous specs and features? Excellent I would say but I'm not going into details yet as the phone had again a prototype software version. This feature is highly crucial as it is the main selling point of the phone so I’ll spare it for now, but nonetheless, several sample images of the Nokia PureView's final software versions were already on the web capturing breathtakingly impressive images.

Wrap up

I was more than happy with my first encounter with the phone; it was unexpectedly exceptional in many ways. More than enough, I'm delighted that it was running Symbian because it will redeem the software from the negative impressions that hurdles it. Symbian had greatly evolved, even the fiercest detractors attest to that. It’s about time for it to take the center stage and seal its stand on the league of modern Operating Systems.

They say the phone is a breakthrough technology, well, I would like to call it a masterpiece since it will go down in history as the greatest high-end Symbian device to ever exist.

Nokia 808 PureView Comes to the Philippines in July

The award winning and most awaited camera phone of the year finally gets a July launching month in the Philippines, according to a Nokia insider. The phone had already started selling in Russia and India with several countries to follow next week, Filipinos will have to bear a month more of waiting.

I myself had been longing for the phone ever since it was announced at Mobile World Congress 2012, the 41MP Carl Zeiss camera optics had grab my full attention being a photo buff. For the record, I have never stick to a smartphone that was not camera centric and never will, camera is a huge part of my life and this blog.

No exact release date or official price yet as of the moment but Nokia Philippines promised a very competitive price for Symbian supporters, a last hurray of the legendary Operating System on high end market. Event will be held to introduce the phone locally but unlike the recent activities of the Lumia series and the Nokia N8 introduction two years ago, the aforementioned event will only be nominal, how minor is it, that we have to find out.

Aside from the high-resolution 41 megapixel sensor with high-performance Carl Zeiss optics and new pixel oversampling technology, the phone also have a full HD 1080p video recording and playback with 4X lossless zoom, Nokia Rich Recording, Xenon and LED Flash, a Dolby Digital Plus for 5.1 channel surround sound playback, 4 inches AMOLED screen display with ClearBlack Display technology, Symbian Belle Feature Pack 1, WLAN, Bluetooth among others.

Oh well, picturesque places and cool party events ready, get set…

Nokia 808 PureView? Nokia Philippines Teases with a Weekend Announcement!

"Something BIG is coming this weekend. What do you think it is, Nokianatics?" This is the phrase with an inset image that Nokia Philippines posted this morning via their official Twitter and Facebook client raising speculations on what it might be.

Baffling, I would say, Nokia Philippines made it sure that their announcement will leave readers bemuse at the same time excited. From the looks of it, the image seems to signify color variants of the Nokia Lumia 900, the Cyan, White, Black and Magenta while it also looks like a by-product of the most powerful cameraphone in the market, the Nokia 808 PureView, being taken with precision and quality.

Well, if its indeed, Nokia Lumia 900, then I think its about time that Nokia Philippines gave it a release date. The phone had already undergone a successful launching event so its high time for it to be available to public.

On the other hand, if its the Nokia 808 PureView, then I think its about time for me to start accruing funds, my blog needs a new and better shooter and a new inspiration.

Since its going to be unveiled this weekend and I'm just so happen to be somewhere in Manila by then, I might be able to witness the event up close as it unfolds. Very excited here, no wait, make that 808-900x excited! Stay tuned! ;D

Nokia extends its partnership with Carl Zeiss

More superior camera smartphones are yet to come as Nokia and Carl Zeiss announced its extended exclusive partnership, creating the likes of Nokia N8 and the Nokia 808 PureView, industry's best and unparalleled camera smartphones.

The Nokia 808 PureView, which will start rolling out in May, combines high-performance Carl Zeiss optics with Nokia developed algorithms and a super-high resolution sensor to set a new standard in high-end smartphone imaging.

"Carl Zeiss was a crucial partner in the creation of the first PureView experience," said Jo Harlow, executive vice president of Nokia Smart Devices. "The benefits of our ongoing collaboration will be more PureView innovation and further advancements in smartphone imaging in the coming months and years."

Michael Kaschke, CEO, Carl Zeiss AG: "When joining forces with Nokia in 2005, we wanted to push the boundaries of mobile photography. Looking back at seven years of successful partnership, we are proud of the innovations and outstanding products created in this shared journey. Today we are celebrating the extension of our collaboration with a new technology that sets another real benchmark in this sector."

I'm definitely getting the Nokia 808 PureView because if there is one thing that will rekindle my passion for the blog, its the phone with its superior camera specs. I started the blog out of my love for Nokia N82, then I keep it running with a Nokia N8 on my side, now its the 808 PureView's time to capture the blog's moments.

At Long Last, The Nokia 808 PureView Will Start Rolling Out This Month

Finally, Nokia confirmed today that the Nokia 808 PureView will start rolling out this month in select markets.

Since its launch at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona last February 2012, I've already been, head over hells, LUSTING for the PureView like no other yet in the whole wide world. It represents mobilephone's highest level smartphone imaging experience, bringing together high-performance sensors, exclusive Carl Zeiss optics, and Nokia developed imaging algorithms.

Among the aforementioned select markets to offer the PureView includes Russia and India, while the rest of the world can only hope to be among the early beneficiaries, Philippines, nah!, its very much unlikely, but hopefully it will, I want the phone as a birthday gift for myself.

Among the awards received by the phone include Best Mobile Device at Mobile World Congress 2012 and Best Imaging Innovation for 2012 from the Technical Image Press Association (TIPA).

The Nokia 808 PureView included the following features; a large, high-resolution 41 megapixel sensor with high-performance Carl Zeiss optics and new pixel oversampling technology, full HD 1080p video recording and playback with 4X lossless zoom and the world's first use of Nokia Rich Recording. Rich Recording enables audio recording at CD-like levels of quality, previously only possible with external microphones., exclusive Dolby Headphone technology, transforming stereo content into a personal surround sound experience over any headphones and Dolby Digital Plus for 5.1 channel surround sound playback, 4 inches AMOLED screen display with ClearBlack Display technology and Symbian Belle Feature Pack 1.

Now my fund raising starts, who wants to buy my Nokia N8! c",
