Nokia's Phablet Power Duo's, The Lumia 1520 and 1320

Announce at the Nokia World 2013 Event n Abu Dhabi, Nokia heralds its first entry into the Phablet arena via the Lumia 1520 and Lumia 1320.

With the growing popularity of six inch screen smartphones, Nokia couldn't help but bask into the competition, but its not just about screen size for their two phablets, it also had the latest software advancements for Windows Phone. The additional screen size offers a new third column of tiles on the home screen giving people more options for customization and personalization. Pair these with the award-winning Lumia design with the most advanced camera innovations, its a win-win combination for the ever growing tech savvy consumers.

Nokia Lumia 1520

Award winning design, solid built and construction, 1080p full HD display with 367 ppi pixel density, 20MP PureView camera with optical image stabilization (OIS) as well as oversampling and zooming technology similar to the Lumia 1020, this were just among the few key features of the Nokia Lumia 1520. The HD Display gives the phone an acuminous and colorful screen display making it glorious to look at. The latest imaging iteration enables sharp images even in the dark.

The Lumia 1520 also features the new Nokia Camera and Nokia Storyteller applications, Nokia Rich Recording for an unparalleled audio capture using four built-in microphones. Microsoft Office built in for editing and sharing documents easily for maximum productivity.

The Nokia Lumia 1520 will be available in yellow, white, black and glossy red. It is expected to start shipping in Q4 2013, with an estimated price of USD749 (PHP32,500) before taxes and subsidies in Hong Kong, Singapore, U.S., China, U.K., France, Germany, Finland and other European markets, with other markets to follow.

Nokia Lumia 1320

The Lumia 1320 on the other hand features many high-end Lumia innovations on a large 6-inch 720p display and extends the Nokia Camera app to another price range. With a range of imaging apps available, the Lumia 1320 comes with Nokia Music for free streaming of ad-free music and HERE maps and location services, so people can experience the most popular Lumia experiences at a more accessible price.

Nokia Lumia 1020 Now Available In The Philippines

Our long wait is over ladies and gents, the cameraphone royalty had finally arrive in the Philippines, unofficially though via Kimstore, an online shop selling mobilephones, laptops, digital and DSLR cameras and other electronic merchandise and accessories.

The online shop is currently selling the phone for PhP32,780.00 with a 1 year store service warranty and 3 days unit replacement in-case of factory defect; quite expensive than the announced worldwide price but justifiable in my opinion being the first and the only store to offer such in the country for the time being. Nokia Philippines is yet to launch the device this quarter so the unofficial variants like these units, doesn't have a Nokia warranty that when parts are broken or otherwise had malfunctioned resulting from misuse, software modification, tampering, failure to follow instructions in the manual, exposure to dust or dirt, water dropping, electric shock among the rest of incidents beyond Kimstore's service capacity, owners will need to pay for the repairs when endorsed to Nokia Service Centers.

Besides the price, no other information's were posted, most specially color availability, so you might have to settle for whats available.

The Nokia Lumia 1020 heralds the best cameraphone technology and features to date; the second generation  41 megapixel sensor with a reinvented zoom technology; the award winning PureView camera features; the next generation optical image stabilization OIS that uses state-of-the-art ball bearings into the camera module capturing blur free images and videos; Carl Zeiss optics with six physical lenses that delivers a crystal clear pictures even in low light conditions; the next generation of Xenon Flash; the Nokia Pro Camera App that is capable of making the experience easy for anyone to take professional quality images; among the rest.

God knows how much I wanted to own this phone being the only genuine smartphone device that offers the best and the most innovative features yet, but straight out of the pocket cash purchase is impossible for me to do at the moment, so I might wait for other options. Anyone who wants to offer it by installment? :) Poor me!

Anyways, I'm glad to know that its already here, I've been bombarded with questions via twitter, email and comments section in the blog about its local availability, at long last, it can now be snag by just a click away.

The Nokia Leaked Devices and the October 22, 2013 Nokia World Event

When Nokia sent an invitation regarding their Nokia World event, the already leaked plaque mobilephone industry went even spurious with now, countless of images from several unannounced Nokia devices going around tech and blog sites making it seem like the said event is going to be huge with several products to be announced, not to mention of course, the media's enthusiasm and excitement over these products, a very unusual scenario that I haven't witness for quite sometime for the company.

So what are all these ruckus all about? Lets begin the rundown from the most significant to the least.

Nokia Lumia 2520

The suppose, first tablet device running the new Windows RT version 8.1. Rumor also has it that the device had a 10.1" 1080p screen display, 1 2.15GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon processor, 32GB storage, a 6.7MP rear camera with Carl Ziess lens, 4G LTE connectivity, micro HDMI and micro-USB port. It is said to be exclusive to Verizon Wireless in the United States for about $499.00 but with a worldwide retail counterpart.

My thoughts: If Nokia will put a full Windows 8 version on it and not just and Windows RT, then I'm sold for it most specially that I'm opting to replace my aging laptop. I need a device that could serve me in two ways, as a full blown workable laptop and a tablet where I can surf and play.

Nokia Lumia 1520

The one with the most number of leaked images yet, rumor has it that the device had on board, the latest Windows Phone 8 version which is the GDR3, a 6.0 inch screen, 1080p screen display, Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 processor, 32GB storage, a 20MP rear camera with Carl Ziess lens and PureView technology, 4G LTE connectivity, micro HDMI and micro-USB port.

My thoughts: Well, its about time for Nokia to step up in the game and give a head to head challenge to every size and dimension that competitors offer. I might not be a huge fan of oversize phones but the market exists. Its a perfect moment to give the competitors a run for their money.

Nokia Lumia 929

Perhaps the most recent among all the leaks, the device is said to have the latest Windows Phone 8 version which is the GDR3, a 5.0" 1080p screen display, Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 processor, 32GB storage, a 20MP rear camera with Carl Ziess lens and PureView technology, 4G LTE connectivity, micro HDMI and micro-USB port. More similar to the Lumia 1520 actually, but only with a smaller screen and is heading to Verizon Wireless alone.

My thoughts: Diversity I supposed. Good to know that Nokia is closely collaborating with US carriers and give these telecom companies what they want. The iPhone made it big because of this strategy, Nokia can do it as well.

Nokia Asha 500

This is said to be the latest iteration of the Nokia Asha 501 with the same features and specifications except the new design frame which is more attractive than the latter. Among the physical changes were the colorless frame around the edges and the capacitive button at the bottom.

My thoughts: Well, if Nokia would have add a few more inches on the screen to lets say the least .5inch, then it would have been a lot better. The new fluid and smooth Asha Touch interface should not be confined on a 3.0 inch phone, it deserves larger than that.

Well, the event might also include the announcement of  an Android running Nokia devices, excerpts from the imminent Microsoft acquisition or the failure of it, among other uncertainties. Only one thing is certain perhaps, that after the event, the industry will still be bombarded with device leaks and rumor, as believable or ridiculous as it may seem.

Did The Nokia Lumia 1020 Impressed? My Thoughts

Before the July 11 New York event, I wrote an article about my expectations on the soon to be announced device, the Nokia Lumia 1020. The very day came and the event went down in Nokia's history as the best product lunch yet. I was very impress by the way they presented the device giving at first a back draft of cameraphone history then moving forward to the present and giving hints for what is up ahead. Stephen Elop and the rest of the presenters were also commendable, they were really excited and proud of the device that jolliness exudes naturally out of them making the presentation fun and very informative. A job well done to the whole team. Stephen by the way brilliantly answered the press questions as well, now I know why a lot of people adores him.

Now on to the question at bar, did the Nokia Lumia 1020 impressed and leave up to my expectations?

Well, generally yes, it was impressive but compromising in terms of meeting the rest of my assumptions. It wasn't jaw dropping like the Nokia 808 PureView because rumor muggers were already on its heals revealing how the device looks like and some of its specs but even so, it still was able to create the awesomeness factor complemented hugely by the new and exclusive applications and features on board like the Camera App Pro, the reinvented Zoom mechanism, new HERE+ Maps among others. I'm very excited about the endless possibilities that I can do with it.

I'm happy as well with the phones design and construction, base on the specs sheet provided, it will be thinner than the Nokia Lumia 920 and not plastic-ky like the Nokia 808 PureView. It also had the edgy head-turner design like its predecessors and best of all, manageable screen size of 4.5".

I'm glad to know that Nokia was trying hard to port applications to Windows Phone like Flipboard for instance, a magazine reader that I love to use in my Android tablet. Then theirs the Hipstamatic Oggl PRO that allows users to post images to Instagram and the rest of the third party photo enhancement apps like Panagraph, Snapcam, etc., fitting the device's powerful camera.

I also found the Nokia Camera Grip very clever. Its an accessory that could be easily clip into the device enhancing its camera feel and extending its usability via its in-house battery.

Nokia Lumia 1020 with Nokia Camera Grip

And then the rest compromises starts, primarily with the Windows Phone 8 being the very same software that I've tried and hesitantly accepts due to issues and missing features. I know the Azure update is coming and would probably be pre-installed on the Lumia 1020, but until now, no one really knows what it can exactly do and how many of the issues had it addressed.

Then the worldwide release would seemed to mimic the Nokia Lumia 920 scenery being also gradual. It could be that the device will arrive in the Philippines in a year or two again that I might really get tired waiting for it and opt to for another camera device instead like the Samsung Galaxy S4 Zoom or any other device that gets announce and release right away by competitors. Worse, it could end up being offered in Smart Telecom alone at a hefty price, competition among telecom companies offering it would have lowered the phone's price.

Wrap Up

It will really depends on Nokia and Microsoft now, for Nokia to act aggressively in offering the device in a worldwide scale and for Microsoft to raise the bar of its software capabilities. I believe this would be their last change to show to world that they deserve a comeback. Failure will really doom both companies.

1 Day More To Go! My Expectations On The Highly Coveted Nokia Lumia 1020

It's not obvious that my excitement for the Nokia July 11 event was over the top, thats because I'm seeing it as my best option for upgrade to my aging Nokia N8. Its been 3 years since I got the Nokia N8 and within those years, I haven't really found any worthy successor amidst the release of Nokia 808 PureView and Nokia Lumia 920, two powerful and very capable cameraphones.

My expectations for tomorrow, well, quite a lot actually, I'm expecting first and foremost, a phone with a snazzy camera features. 41MP is no surprise already, so I'm looking for something new, innovative and jaw dropping, kinda like the scenario when Nokia announced the 41MP camera on the 808 PureView. It might be an ubercool software feature or an editing application, best, a hardware with zoom capability like no other.

Secondly, I'm expecting a phone with a super sexy, attractive and durable design and construction that competitors would die in envy seeing it. The Nokia Lumia 920 is flawed with a thick dimension while the 808 PureView had a regular look with a plastic feel, the new device should be unique and perfect in any way possible.

Windows Phone software should be on its bests self with all the issues resolved and missing important features provided. The software the already an epitome of smoothness and fluidity, all it need is improvement in terms of usability and features. Address all the aforementioned and its perfect.

I'm expecting the phone as well to have a worldwide release in 2-3 weeks, like it should be made available in many countries as possible and not a year or two after, like what happened to the Nokia Lumia 920's availability here in the Philippines. It took Nokia Philippines quite sometime to port the phone locally that buyers like me have grown tired waiting.

And lastly, it should be easily and afford-ably available in all local network operators in the country. I'm really mesmerized on what Apple, Samsung and RIM did with their flagship phones being readily accessible in all network operators for as low as PhP1,500 in a 30 month contract, just a few weeks after the phones worldwide release. That's like super affordable for anyone at a perfect time! If Nokia won't be able to do the same, then I might already become an iPhone 6 or Samsung Galaxy S5 user before the Nokia Lumia 1020 arrives.

Comments welcome!

Nokia EOS, to be announced most probably in the July 11 New York Event

If there is one thing that I'm very excited about lately, its the rumored Nokia Lumia EOS with the 41MP PureView goodness which is most likely my next smartphone upgrade to replace my aging Nokia N8, the 2008-2009 camera king.

My Windows Phone 8 upgrade is inevitable since Nokia will stop shipping Symbian devices in a months time with the Nokia 808 PureView as the last breed and I have never been attracted to Android because if its technical nature or iOS because of its restrictions. Hopefully though, the Windows Phone 8 had matured enough when the EOS comes with all my concerns properly address. Read all my rants about Windows Phone 8 in my Nokia Lumia 920 review.

Anyways, there were already several leaked images of the EOS circulating in the web plus a media invite sent by Nokia of a certain event in New York this coming July 11th, fueling the rumor further of the phones official announcement.

Well, its definitely getting exciting in the Nokia and Windows Phone camp, lets see in three weeks time if the rumors were true. So far here were the leaked specifications of what is touted as the next camera king.

- 41MP Carl Ziess camera with PureView technology
- Xenon Flash
- 5.0 inch AMOLED Screen with ClearBlack technology
- Metallic back cover
- Qualcomm Snapdragon 400 Quad Core processor
- Windows Phone 8.1
- Non removable battery
- Radio FM capability

The Nokia Lumia 720 Journal Part 6: Camera and Beyond (Video Shot)

As equally as important as the still images for some users is the camcorder feature of the phone. The Nokia Lumia 720 had a camera technology beyond the norm among mid tier devices like Carl Ziess lens technology, wide aperture, BSI and most importantly an 720p HD video support recording 30fps with video zoom and continuous auto-focus features.

To show its camera capture capability, I thought of coming up with a video that have never been done before in the blog, a parody of PSY's latest worldwide hit, Gentlemen, featuring my sister and two nephews. Take note, they practiced the steps for two days so its an epic video like no other. :D

Anyway, here is the sample video of the Nokia Lumia 720. Have fun!

Vyclone now available on Nokia Lumia smartphones

Fun of making videos? The social video app Vyclone can now be downloaded free by Nokia Lumia smartphones running Windows Phone 8.

Vyclone gives users the ability to create and edit multi-camera movies, intuitively and simply without the need for expensive cameras or editing software; and the app allows people to immediately share the content via social networks. Vyclone paired with a PureView camera optics could definitely create a crisper imagery and superior audio resulting to higher quality movies than competitors from other platforms.

Vyclone joins the 145,000 apps available for Windows Phone. Among the top 50 of the aforementioned apps includes: Pandora, Temple Run, Burton, Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf, ESPN Hub, LinkedIn, TripAdvisor, Vimeo, WhatsApp, Words with Friends, Draw Something, Oreo Skies, World of Red Bull and The Sims Medieval.

The Nokia Lumia 720 Journal Part 4: Camera and Beyond (Day Shots)

The Nokia Lumia 720 boasts the following camera specs, rear: 6.7 MP with Carl Ziess lens, f1.9 aperture, BSI, Auto-Focus, LED flash, HD 720p at 30fps; front: HD 1.3MP wide angle. They are not the industry's top of the line but quite remarkable enough or if not, the best among midrange devices.

Well, I have to mention over again that I don't really have much knowledge in reviewing camera performances and its technicalities, all I can offer is a direct general approach being photo enthusiasts and a huge fan of cameraphones for the past 5 years. On the record, I have owned Nokia N82 and Nokia N8 both king of cameraphones in their respective eras, and tried a bunch of devices from different manufacturers. To measure the phone's camera performance, I divided the camera tests into two, Night Shots and Day Shots plus a head to head comparison with my beloved Nokia N8.

As an initial thought, I'm not really expecting a lot from it since by comparison to my Nokia N8, the phone had a lower megapixel count and had no PureView technology like the Lumia 920. Anyways, without further ado, ladies and gentlemen, here are some of my personal favorites.

Well, I find the results quite impressive for a mid-range phone with only 6.7MP. Somehow the apertures and the rest of the camera specs and application improvements made by Nokia were the reason behind all these. I didn't really appreciate much of the photos taken while on the phone with all those granular pixels brought about by the phone's cut down IPS screen but when I transferred it to my laptop, they were quite pleasant to look at. I like the color rendition and the crispness of the photo's, though they tend to get saturated noisy in some parts.

Perhaps one of the biggest reason why Nokia announced the Lumia 925 in the middle of the year is because they listen dearly to consumers. The Lumia 920 was a wonderful device but its not perfect, the newly announced device answers most of these concerns in a stylish and innovative way.

Stylish because the Nokia Lumia 925 introduces a metal design to the framework with a sizable decrease on thickness, innovative on the other hand because of new algorithm applied on the PureView technology as well as new features and third party applications. The PureView innovation includes the most advanced lens technology and next generation imaging software to capture clearer, sharper pictures and video, including the best low light images. New feature includes the new Nokia Smart Camera mode and Nokia Smart Camera that offers an easy way to capture ten images at once and edit the pictures with options like Best Shot, Action Shot, and Motion Focus for creating the perfect high quality image.
